- Makola Market: Overwhelming, loud, colourful — the real Accra. Don't bring valuables.
- Jamestown Lighthouse: Climb for rooftop views over the old fishing harbour
- Labadi Beach: The city's main beach. Live music weekends. Go Sunday afternoon.

- A chop bar: Local canteens serving banku, fufu, jollof. Ask locals for their favourite — every neighbourhood has one.
- Buka Restaurant: Proper Ghanaian food, well-presented. Great for first-timers.
- Auntie Muni waakye: Waakye (rice & beans) is the breakfast of Accra. Street-side, early morning.
Do this
- Detty December: If you're there Dec — Afrobeats concerts, beach parties, the whole diaspora comes home. Plan months ahead.
- Osu Night Market / Oxford Street at night: Street food, nightlife, art vendors — the buzzing heart of young Accra
- Cape Coast day trip: 2hrs drive. Cape Coast Castle is essential — powerful, important history.
Local tips
- Download Bolt before you land: more reliable than Uber in Accra
- MoMo (MTN Mobile Money) is essential. Get a local SIM at the airport and load it up.
- Traffic peaks 7-9am and 4-7pm. It can take 2hrs to cross the city. Plan accordingly.
- 'Obroni' means foreigner: it's not hostile, just descriptive. Smile back.

Trotros (shared minibuses) are cheap and everywhere. Bolt/Uber work well in central Accra. Traffic is legendary — plan around it.

GHS (cedi). MoMo (mobile money) is king — most vendors accept it. ATMs available but carry some cash.
Safety
Generally safe. Petty theft in crowded areas (Makola, Kaneshie). Avoid isolated beaches at night. Trust your instincts.
